Terms of service

These terms govern your use of Semestr, an independent academic planner operated by Marius Morutan Vlad, Netherlands. Contact mmorutan17@gmail.com for questions or support. By creating an account or using the service, you agree to these terms. Our Privacy policy explains personal-data processing; accepting these terms is not blanket consent to that processing.

1. The service

Semestr helps you organise events, coursework, tasks, and reminders and connect supported external services. It is currently free and offered by invitation. Some features may be unavailable, subject to usage limits, or still in development. A feature described as planned or coming soon is not a promise of current availability. Any future paid offering would require separate pricing information and your agreement before a charge.

Semestr is not an official university record or an emergency notification service. It is not affiliated with or endorsed by Google or your university merely because it connects to their services. Check important deadlines, cancellations, and exam details against the original source.

2. Your account

Sign in using your own Google account and keep it secure. Use accurate account information, do not share invitation codes without permission, and tell us if you suspect unauthorised access. You must have the legal capacity, or any parent or guardian permission required by applicable law, to agree to these terms and use the service.

You may use Semestr only lawfully. Do not attempt to access another person's data, bypass security or usage limits, disrupt the service, distribute malicious code, or upload material you have no right to use. Good-faith reports of security problems are welcome at the contact above.

3. Your content and connected services

You retain your rights in the content you provide. You permit us to host, process, display, and transmit it only as needed to provide the features you request, maintain security, and comply with law, subject to the Privacy policy. This permission does not give us ownership of your content or a right to sell it or use it for advertising.

Connecting another service authorises the access and synchronisation described in the connection flow and Privacy policy. Changes you make may be written to a connected Google calendar or task list where you enable that feature. Additional permission is requested for editing events on calendars you own or running timetable cleanup. Review what you authorise, particularly operations that delete external events.

External services have their own terms, availability, and privacy policies. You can disconnect a service or revoke its permissions. Ending a connection does not necessarily remove content already copied between services. Deleting a Semestr account does not delete your Google account or calendars, events, and tasks remaining there; manage those directly in Google if you want them removed.

4. Accuracy and AI assistance

Imports, synchronisation, timezones, reminders, and AI interpretation can be delayed or incorrect. Capture may interpret a submitted note using Google Gemini through Vercel AI Gateway and save the resulting planner items. Review the result and correct mistakes. Ordinary item forms can be used without AI. Keep another record of information you cannot afford to lose; Semestr is not a permanent archive.

5. Retention and account deletion

The default retention period is 90 days after an event ends or a task or reminder is completed or deleted, as detailed in the Privacy policy. Future events and unfinished work are kept while the account is active. Completed or deleted content can be permanently removed after its retention period; viewing it or signing in does not extend that period.

Confirming Delete my account in Settings causes immediate, permanent deletion of your account and its planner data from our active database. You confirm by typing your account email address. There is no waiting period or recovery window, and signing in again cannot restore the account or its contents.

Account deletion overrides the remaining 90-day retention period, including for future events and unfinished work. Backup expiry and limited retention exceptions are explained in the Privacy policy. You may also contact us to request erasure; these terms do not limit your statutory rights. Copies held in your Google account remain under your control and can be managed or deleted directly in Google.

6. Availability, changes, and suspension

We aim to operate Semestr with reasonable care, but do not guarantee uninterrupted availability or error-free results. We may make necessary maintenance and security changes. We may restrict or suspend access where reasonably necessary to address misuse, a security risk, a legal requirement, or a material breach of these terms.

Where practicable and lawful, we explain a restriction and give you a way to contact us about it. If we plan to discontinue the service, we give reasonable advance notice and an opportunity to request a copy of your data before closure. Urgent security or legal circumstances may require faster action. Suspension does not remove your data-protection rights or create an unlimited retention period.

7. Responsibility and your legal rights

To the extent permitted by applicable law, we are not responsible for losses caused by inaccurate source information, events outside our reasonable control, or use of the service in breach of these terms. This does not exclude responsibility where the law makes us responsible, including mandatory consumer and data-protection rights. Nothing in these terms limits liability for fraud, intentional misconduct, gross negligence, or anything else that cannot lawfully be limited.

8. Applicable law and disputes

Dutch law applies to these terms. If you are a consumer, you retain any mandatory protections provided by the law of your country of habitual residence. You may bring a claim before any court that has jurisdiction under applicable law, including your local courts where those rules permit. These terms do not require you to waive those protections or use arbitration.

You can contact us to try to resolve a concern, but doing so is not a condition of exercising a statutory remedy or contacting a supervisory authority. If a provision is unenforceable, the remaining provisions continue to apply to the extent permitted by law.

9. Updates to these terms

We may revise these terms when features, legal requirements, or service arrangements change. We show the revision date and give reasonable notice of material changes before they take effect where practicable. Where a change requires your agreement, we ask for it. If you do not accept a change, you may stop using Semestr and request account deletion. Changes do not remove rights that have already arisen.
